 All hail the Bar-tailed Godwit! 

This bird is a champion flyer and once again an individual has broken the world record for the longest continual flight. 

This week a juvenile godwit just 5 months old landed in Ansons Bay in northeast Tasmania. It had been tagged in Alaska and departed there on October 13, 2022 before flying non-stop to Tasmania. 

Godwits are regular visitors to Tasmania so it’s likely that many undertake a similar flight but it's the first time a tagged bird has flown between Alaska and Tasmania. 

This bird flew a minimum of 13,560 km in 11 days 1 hour, that’s an average of over 51kmh continually for those 11 days. And don’t forgot there will be no eating, drinking or sleeping during that journey! 

Simply unbelievable!

Story Behind the Shot: I visit this park near my home to photograph blackbirds on cold mornings, often aiming to capture the "smoke rings" that form from their breath as they sing out. On this occasion, I arrived early on a frigid day and heard the cry of the blackbirds all around the boardwalk. This particular bird was very vociferous, singing long and hard. I looked to set it against the dark background of the forest, shooting to the east as the sun rose over the trees, backlighting the vapor.

Bird Lore: Red-winged Blackbirds are some of the most abundant and conspicuous birds in North America. Beginning in early spring, males perch above marshes, pond edges, damp fields, and roadside ditches, flaring their red shoulder patches and belting out arresting songs to announce their claims to breeding territories.

 മരിക്കും മുമ്പ് എനിക്കീ മണ്ണിൽ ഒരു കോടി മരം നടണം; ബാലേട്ടൻ പറയുന്നു

നൂറ് ഏക്കറിൽക്കൂടുതൽ വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള ഒരു കാട് വെച്ചുപിടിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു മനുഷ്യനാണ് പാലക്കാടുകാരൻ ബാലേട്ടൻ. അമ്പതാം വയസ്സിൽ ലഭിച്ച ഒരു ഉൾവിളിയുടെ പുറത്ത് പ്രകൃതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിന് ഇറങ്ങിയ ബാലേട്ടൻ രണ്ട് പതിറ്റാണ്ട് കൊണ്ട് നട്ടുവളർത്തിയത് ഇരുപത് ലക്ഷം മരങ്ങളാണ്. നടൽ മാത്രമല്ല അവയെ പരിക്ക് പറ്റാതെ സംരക്ഷിക്കലും ബാലേട്ടന് സ്വന്തം ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമാണ്

രാവിലെ നാലര മണിക്ക് എഴുന്നേറ്റ് പ്രഭാത കൃത്യങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ പിന്നെ ബാലേട്ടന് ചിന്തിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ നേരമില്ല. കൈക്കോട്ടും കുട്ടയുമായി ചുടിയൻ മലയിലേക്ക് ഒരു നടത്തമാണ്. ഈ മലയുടെ താഴെയാണ് ബാലേട്ടന്റെ വീട്. കരിമ്പനകൾക്ക് താഴെ വീണുകിടക്കുന്ന പനമ്പഴം ശേഖരിക്കുകയാണ് ആദ്യത്തെ ജോലി. പിന്നെ മലയുടെ താഴ്വാരത്തിൽ അത് നടുന്നു. മലയുടെ ചെരുവുകളിലും. മരങ്ങളോട് കുശലം പറഞ്ഞ് മെല്ലെ നടന്ന് മുകളിൽ എത്തിയാൽ ചെറിയ വ്യായാമം. വിത്തു ശേഖരണത്തിലും അവ നടുന്നതിലും തന്നെ തിരികെ മലയിറങ്ങുമ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധ. കഴിഞ്ഞ 22 വർഷമായി പുള്ളിയുടെ പതിവുപരിപാടികളാണിത്.

മുണ്ടൂരിലെയും പാലക്കാട് മാർക്കറ്റിലെയും പഴക്കടകളിൽ നിന്ന് എല്ലാ ദിവസവും ശേഖരിക്കുന്ന പഴങ്ങൾ കഴുകി വൃത്തിയാക്കി അത് വണ്ടിയിലാക്കി ബാലേട്ടൻ കാട്ടിലെത്തിക്കും. അതെന്തിനാണെന്നറിയുമ്പോഴാണ് നമ്മൾ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുക. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങൾ നാട്ടിൽ ഇറങ്ങാതിരിക്കാനാണ് ഇത്. അവർക്ക് വേണ്ട ഭക്ഷണവും വെള്ളവും കാട്ടിൽ തന്നെ എത്തിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയാണ് ബാലേട്ടൻ. എല്ലാ ദിവസവും രാവിലെയും വൈകീട്ടും അയ്യർമലയിലെ കാനന വഴികളിൽ വണ്ടിയിൽ പഴങ്ങളുമായെത്തുന്ന ബാലേട്ടനെ കാണാം.

അമ്പരപ്പിക്കുന്ന കടുവയുടെ ചിത്രവുമായി പ്രിയങ്കഗാന്ധിയുടെ മകന്‍ റൈഹാന്‍ വദ്ര. ഇതു പറയുമ്പോള്‍ തോന്നും, റൈഹാന്‍ വന്യജീവി ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫറാണോന്ന്. അല്ല, റൈഹാന്‍ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫറല്ല. എങ്കിലും അമ്പരപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഫോട്ടോയുടെ ഉടമയാണ്.

രംന്താപൂര്‍ ദേശീയ പാര്‍ക്കില്‍ നിന്ന് റൈഹാന്‍ പകര്‍ത്തിയതാണ് കടുവയുടെ ചിത്രം. കുറ്റിച്ചെടികള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ പതുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന കടുവയുടെ ചിത്രം ഇന്നലെയാണ് റൈഹാന്‍ സാമൂഹ്യമാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കുവെച്ചത്. കടുവയുടെ കണ്ണുമാത്രം ചെടികള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ നിന്ന് കാണുന്ന രീതിയിലുള്ളതാണ് ചിത്രം.
